Day 343: Visit Southern Mecca

August 11, 2011 § Leave a comment

Today I ate at Chick-fil-A, the apparent Mecca of Southerners.

The first one in Chicago opened up about three months ago right off of Michigan Ave., and every Southern friend I have talks about it like it’s some sort of sacred temple that requires a pilgrimage. My buddy Carten has been insistant for weeks that a pre-class breakfast trek was needed, so today we indulged him.

It seems most Chick-fil-A’s look like your typical fast food joint, but this particular one looks trendy and gourmet.

It even has free Wi-fi and a menu out front inside of a glass case.

I went with a chicken, egg and cheese breakfast bagel, coffee and some hash brown coins. And I was not disappointed.

I finally understand all the hype. Those Southerners are on to something. That chicken was fantastic.

After devouring every last crumb, we left. As we made our way back to the subway, we saw a guy in jeans and a backward Atlanta Braves hat peel around the corner. He looked up at the Chick-fil-A sign, made a loud “whoop”, and beelined through the door. That lightly breaded chicken and those savory biscuits are like some sort of dixie narcotic.

And I’ll be back for more.
