Day 317: Eat famous Italian Beef

July 16, 2011 § Leave a comment

I finally had lunch at Al’s Italian Beef, which has been the premier vendor of Chicago’s delectable, sopping, cow-stuffed sandwiches since 1938.

It has won awards in publications from Travel & Leisure to Esquire, which even went so far as to say that Al’s has the “best sandwiches in America.” They stuffed my sandwich bun with tender beef, sweet and hot peppers, and cheddar cheese, then used tongs to dip the entire thing in some sort of Au Jus-like sauce. It literally and figuratively melted in my mouth.

I’m pretty sure that when I leave Chicago I’m going to go into awesome food withdrawal.
