Day 269: Slice a pineapple

May 30, 2011 § 1 Comment

While the adventurous, the outrageous and the just plain silly have come to dominate the pages of the Novice du Jour, one of the blog’s primary pillars has always been to take on any and all things new, including the seemingly trivial. Tonight that meant slicing up a pineapple.

Cutting up a pineapple is the oil painting of the fruit carving world. It’s way more tedious and time-consuming than it looks. So I turned to this youtube video for instructions:

It was helpful. I treated that pineapple like a Shake Weight so the sugars would course through its veins, then skinned it with the care of Buffalo Bill. By the time I finished, the citric acid had seeped through all the cracks in my dry hands, sterilizing them pretty thoroughly. This was the final product:

Maybe they weren’t restaurant quality. Maybe they weren’t even uniform enough to be sold in a plastic clamshell at Safeway. The Anal Retentive Chef would be disappointed. However, Stephanie transformed them into this:

A Caribbean Cumin Turkey Burger with pineapple, avocado, and lemon jalapeno aioli (her own creation), garnished with a side of Cauliflower Bleu Cheese Potato Salad and Spicy Thai Kettle Chips.

Bon appetit.

That looks great! It is amazing to me what can come out of that tiny, hole of a kitchen that you guys have. And I think you did an amazing job on that pineapple too. 🙂
