Day 268: Do the Dillo Day

May 29, 2011 § 3 Comments

Lollapalooza? Bonnaroo? Coachella? Nope, it’s Northwestern’s Dillo Day.

Which, as I’m sure you guessed, stands for Armadillo Day – an event  founded in 1972 by some Texan students at NU who decided to hold a celebration in honor of armadillos. 39 years later it has become a day of partying and music on the lake, with past years hosting such prominent acts as The Black Eyed Peas, The Black Keys, The Roots, The Decemberists and Regina Spektor.

And the best part: It’s all free.

This year’s lineup included:

  • The New Pornographers
  • Chiddy Bang
  • Peter Bjorn and John
  • N.A.S.A.
  • B.o.B.
The New Pornographers
A string of tents and stalls featuring henna and tie-dyed t-shirts bordered the main stage like a hippy carnival. A fenced-in beer garden, which looked more like a horse stye than a garden, advertised $5 Miller Lite and was surrounded by bouncers ready to beat down any underage patrons trying to sneak in. There was even a hooka tent to act as a safe haven for pseudo-rebellious students who wanted to participate in the school spirit while still appearing subversive.
The music itself was definitely the primary highlight, followed in a close second by drunken undergrads attempting to dance, but looking more like those inflatable wind decorations you see at used-car lots (Simile credit to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia):
Then the torrential rain began and we ran home, while the drunken undergrads continued to swap mud and tie-dye and bodily fluids.

I love that it took you less than a year to develop such a strong superiority complex towards undergrads.

Don’t think I couldn’t hear that virtual sneer
