Day 191: Be Chi-rish for a day

March 13, 2011 § 5 Comments

We saw them dye the Chicago River green today.

It’s a yearly St. Patrick’s Day tradition in Chicago. Motorboats spew dye into the river and then drive in circles to swirl it up while crowds of anxious onlookers stand alongside the banks.

Then we went to the parade, which consisted of Power Rangers, bagpipes and popes on roller blades.

Many came out decked in the appropriate green garb.

After the parade, the Power Rangers posed for photos by the river. A couple of our more nostalgic friends insisted on forging through the crowd to get pictures. However, we made an abrupt turn around after a guy further ahead started yelling “Abort! Abort! Abort!” because a man in a suit jacket had started vomiting all over his shoes right next to the Power Rangers. You can’t see him here, but he’s about five feet to the left of the Green Ranger. Kids screamed and ran. He puked for about thirty seconds standing completely erect, then very casually walked away. It was bizarre. Even the Power Rangers bailed.

We then went to a really cool Irish bar called D4…

And a not-so-cool but hilariously awesome and cover-charge free bar called Paradise Cantina, which had really awkward paintings on the walls.

A once in a lifetime St. Paddy’s Day in the Windy City.

Looks like you guys had a great time, but what do Power Rangers have to do with St. Paddy’s Day?

Many a year ago, I had the pleasure of seeing the river turn green as I joined some of the locals with the traditional green beer. I thought the people were a study in human behavior as the spirits effected them in a way many had no control. Much like you witnessed. However my thinking was this has to be the best St Paddy’s day ever. That is until I got a call from some of my salespeople who were in Butte Montana, I’ve forgotten the story they told, however it resulted in my csatching a plane and going to Butte. Only to find out the just wanted me to be a part the their St Paddy celebration. For me Butte’s celebration , which entaled an open container law, an endless parade sthat never stopped, went on for more than 24 hours, The crowd was wild, reminded me of the day WWII was over.
Needless to say I think Chicago’s has to be a celebration not to miss, with Butte Montana being a close second. I wonder if its still celebrated like they did many a year ago. Anyway HAPPPY ST PADDY’S DAY
