Day 94: Ask readers for help

December 6, 2010 § 9 Comments

This week we are going to New York City to see Thursday’s live taping of The Daily Show, a trip which I had won from Comedy Central and SportClips back in October. Better yet, James Franco, star of the new movie “127 Days” and the upcoming host of the Academy Awards is going to be the guest.

Here is where I need your help. Neither Stephanie nor I has ever been to New York before. Our hotel is minutes from Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Central Park. Other then The Daily Show, we have no idea how to spend the rest of our weekend.

What should we do?

Please help. I don’t want to squander the trip by accidentally taking a cab to New Jersey or something.

Museum of Natural History! It’s really cool… and you make your own ticket prices :P.

  • Lauren says:

Central Park for sure. Walk the whole thing, it’s awesome. I really love the reservoir.

  • James says:

Search the subway for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

  • Caitlin says:

Definitely go to Crumbs or Magnolia Bakery for cupcakes. Ride the wooden escalators at Macy’s. Buy your weight in M & Ms at M & M World. Play on the dancing piano at FAO Schwarz. Get reduced tickets to a Broadway show (you have to get to the box office pretty early but one time we got a box to ourselves, which was a lot of fun). Go to an authentic NY Deli and of course make a stop at Dunkin’ Donuts for an iced coffee or coffee coolatta. Walk around, half the fun is getting lost.

Tyler, I would suggest taking a city tour such as a Greyline tour. It is a great way to see an overview of the city and then go back to places where you really want to spend some more time. I did that with my folks years ago and saw everything from the Statute of Liberty to Harlem. Then the next day we went back to a few places we wanted to see. Have a great trip. See you soon. Love to you and Stephanie, Lana

  • Liz Caravati says:

See the Blue Man Group on Broadway, or go to the Guggenheim or MoMA.

    Have fun you guys!!

  • David says:

You are in New York. Everyone has an “idea” of what you should do. Our idea is this: step outside your hotel. Say hello to the first person you meet. Stop at the first place you can have coffee. Proceed. Enter the first shop that’s open. Look around. Say hello. Buy something if it’s what you want, but not if it isn’t. Continue walking until you discover you are on top of some place you’ve only seen in picture books. If you find yourself in front of the Empire State Building, definitely go inside. If you run into Rockefeller Center, stop and look around. If the time is anytime around sometime that’s proper, have a beer in a pub or order a drink in a bar.

New York is our world city. Stop wherever. Don’t follow a map. Say hello to everyone.

By the way, after you have two beers in a New York pub, the bartender buys you the third beer. Try it. It works.

Don’t forget to add the price of that beer to your tip. They don’t expect it, but wow, what a bonus for folks who work hard with little return.

Have fun! New York is our world city.

    David
