Day 73: Cover a chili cook off

November 15, 2010 § 2 Comments

Today I covered a chili cook off at the Devonshire Cultural Center in Skokie.

Actually, it didn’t end up being much of a cook off because no contestants entered the competition. To salvage the event, three members of the staff made chili, including a 20-year-old chef who teaches culinary classes at the center, and they had tasters guess which chili was made by the chef.

Although it didn’t end up being the “Meat Eater’s Fest” that had been advertised in fliers and online, everyone was really nice and I got some great interviews and photos to put into a slideshow. They even let me try all three chilis. The chef’s was good (very meaty with breakfast sausage and ground beef), however, I have no doubt that Stephanie’s recipe with chorizo, chocolate (the secret ingredient),  and corn bread and cheese baked on top would have easily won in a real competition.

  • Kevin says:

Unless I entered the competition. Then Stephanie’s would probably lose.

  • Stephanie says:

Maybe if that competition was unfair, with a statistically insignificant number of judges, mostly representative of a single (male, engineering) demographic. Then yes, you might win. Maybe by two votes, in which you and Colton voted for your own. And I did not. Theoretically. If this were ever to occur.
