Day 36: Visit the “Home Alone” house
October 9, 2010 § 2 Comments
You may recognize the house in the above photo as the residence of resourceful young Kevin McCallister in “Home Alone,” the greatest Christmas movie of all time. It is in Winnetka, just a few miles north of where we live in Evanston. One of the guys in Stephanie’s program is from the area and told her about it earlier today. It’s smaller than it looks in the movie, but it is easy to imagine Kevin riding his sled down the front steps, the pizza man knocking over the statue in the driveway, and the mysterious old man salting the sidewalk. They used the real inside of the house for the movie too, but we refrained from peaking through the windows.
We got out of the car to look at the house, and a local woman walking by offered to take our picture. She told us that cars come by all the time to take in this little tourist attraction, buried in an otherwise normal suburb. She politely noted that most people come are more subtle than we were.
Also nearby is the park that Kevin runs through after stealing a toothbrush from the general store, as well as the church where he hides from the bumbling criminals, Harry and Marv. We drove past the church on our way home and saw that they have a big pumpkin sale going on, so expect a post about buying a pumpkin from the church sometime in the near future.
To end, I’ll leave you with perhaps the greatest movie quote of all time: “Buzz, your girlfriend…WOOF!“
