Day 24: Try Vegemite

Vegemite is a black paste of concentrated yeast extract made by Kraft. While shopping at the World Market down the street, we stumbled across a jar on one of the food aisles. Steph had heard that it was extremely popular in Australia, but that the rest of the world found it disgusting. I decided to do my own research. According to Wikipedia, it is typically eaten on sandwiches, toast, crumpets, cracker biscuits, and as a filling for pastries. To me, it smelled like the au jus sauce you’d have with a French Dip.

I spread it on toast. It tasted like a combination of sweat and what I imagine mashed fish eyes would taste like . I could not find my inner Australian, and after a few bites balled it up into a wad and ate it as such to diffuse the taste. I now know why I’ve never seen an Australian restaurant other than Outback Steak House.
